Just Folks. Draw Botanicals: Samaras.

Draw Botanicals. Samaras

This week, I’m excited to share another study from my Draw Botanicals sketchbook, inspired by the sheer abundance of samaras that grace the landscape this time of year. They are everywhere! While these delicate winged pods from maple trees are often overlooked, they possess a quiet beauty that invites closer inspection.

As I curated my small collection, I was struck by how closely they resemble dragonflies in both shape and function. When the wind catches them, they twirl and flutter gracefully, carrying seeds through the air before settling softly to the ground. Their wings disturb the soil just enough to create a welcoming space for new growth—a remarkable design of nature.

The simple act of drawing samaras repeatedly across a two-page spread allowed me to enter a “flow state,” where time felt suspended and my mind quieted. Each deliberate pen stroke grounded me in the present moment, transforming these often-taken-for-granted pods into a source of inspiration and tranquility.
