Just Folks. Lilacs.
I was inspired to paint a "lilac series" after a short bike ride with my sister to a friend's house to pick some.
The sweet fragrance and unassuming beauty never fail to elicit a joyful feeling, and anticipation of all that will follow in Spring and Summer. There are many associations with lilacs-- superstitions, folklore, and religious references. I particularly like the connection made in more modern religious interpretation--lilacs remind us to make time to appreciate the "moments," such as the fleeting early spring lilac blooms--if you don't stop, you will miss them. And, to be firmly and deeply rooted, like the lilac bushes that hold steady and flower year after year. Strong spiritual roots can help us get through more challenging and turbulent times. Mostly though, it is their delicate flower and distinctive fragrance that draws me to them.
